Iron-on patches have a clear coating on the back of the embroidered patch that allows you to attach the patch to various fabrics without sewing. The cost of iron-on patch backing is only $0.10 per patch. Iron-on patch backing can save you time during the application process, and it saves you the money it would cost to pay a tailor to sew on your patches.
Iron-on patches can be applied to non-stretch fabrics using a household iron or a heat press, usually found in most fabric or craft stores. When applying iron-on patches, use medium heat (250-300 degrees) and hold for 8 to 10 seconds. You can protect the surface of your embroidered patch and your iron by placing a thin material, such as a pillowcase, between the iron and the surface of the embroidered patch.
We recommend choosing a hot-cut edge for your iron-on patches if you are going to use iron-on patch backing. The adhesive will extend to the very edge of the embroidered patch. If you choose the standard merrowed border, the border will not have adhesive on the edge of the patch. The cost for a hot-cut edge is only $0.10 per iron-on patch.
Iron-on patch backing also can be used to hold your embroidered patch in place while you sew the perimeter of the patch to the fabric.
We do not recommend using iron-on patches on fabrics that are elastic, or on materials that may be damaged by the heat of an iron or heat press.
